چکیده
In a colony of 11 harbour seals ( Phoca vitulina Linne ́ 1758) two periods of lethal central nervous disorders occurred within two years affecting seven adult animals. Clinical signs comprised dyspnoea, anorexia, apathy, incoordination, and lateral recumbency. Grossly, in two animals a swollen cerebellum with haemorrhages was present. Histological examination in all seven cases revealed a polioencephalomalacia with predominant involvement of the cerebellum. Minor malacic lesions were located in the cerebral cortices, basal ganglia and mesencephalic nuclei. Various infectious and non-infectious agents were excluded. Despite prophylactic thiamine supplementation, the type and pattern of the lesions are most suggestive for thiamine deficiency. Therefore, a high thiaminase activity in the food has to be suspected.

A zoo experienced several fatalities following an outbreak of a Y. pseudotuberculosis infection in Goeldi’s Marmosets (Callimico goeldii) and Cotton Top Tamarins (Saguinus oedipus). The zoo had previously abandoned its vaccination programme due to no outbreaks over the past few years. The animals underwent a post mortem examination at Greendale Veterinary Laboratories and an infection with Y. p...
متن کاملZoo and wildlife medical education: a European perspective.
Europe has a long and distinguished history in veterinary science and education, and it was here that the first professional investigations of pathological conditions in zoo animals took place. However, despite an increasing number of veterinarians working with wildlife, education in zoological and wildlife medicine has only recently become part of formal veterinary training at the undergraduat...

B-cell Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (B-NHL) is a typical tumour after infection with viruses causing immunodeficiency. Both, Simian as well as Human Immundeficiency Virus (SIV and HIV) are well known pathogens suspected to contribute to the development of B-cell lymphoma. Fortunately, macaques infected with SIV were shown to be an adequate non-human primate model for NHL. In our group we established ...
متن کاملClinical implications of infection with a novel metastrongyloid species in the red panda (Ailurus fulgens).
In a recent survey, 30% of the European red panda (Ailurus fulgens) population was found to be infected with a newly discovered metastrongyloid nematode. In a following prospective study, four naturally infected captive-bred red pandas infected with this parasite were examined and compared with two uninfected control animals. On clinical examination, no abnormalities were detected with respect ...
